Taxes
What you will need:
- A W-2 form. This is mailed to students by Payroll about the beginning of February.
- A 1042-S form. This is mailed out by the Controller’s Office to students by the end of March. (Not all students receive a 1042 – S ; check with the office of student employment if you are unsure.)
- A 1099-R form. This form comes from Student Accounts. (Very few students receive a 1099-R.)
- Form 8843. All international students must submit this form, even if you were not employed in the tax year in question.

NY State ID/Driver's License
- About driver’s licenses from other countries.
- If you are licensed to drive in the country you are from, you do NOT need a NY state driver’s license to drive here. Your license is valid.

- If you don’t drive, but don’t want to carry your passport everywhere you go, you can apply for a NY State ID.
- Fill out Form MV-44
- Provide proper identification and proof of birth date.
- You need a total of “6 points” worth of identification.
- If you have a social security card, bring your
- Social Security Card (2 points)
- Passport/I-20 or DS-2019/I-94 (3 points)
- Anything else on the list adding up to 1 point or more.
- If you don’t have a social security card, bring
- A letter or form SSA-L676 from the social security office to testify to that you are not eligible for a social security card.
- Passport/Visa/I-94 (3 points)
- Items on the list adding up to 3 points or more.
